War… What Is It Good For?

While watching Iran lob missiles into Qatar, it occurred to me that much of the world is being led around by the nose by two very questionable characters.

Leading the charge in what could turn into WW III, is Israeli leader, Benjamin Netanyahu. A wanted man, with an arrest warrant having been issued by the International Criminal Court, for suspected war crimes. A man who has been lying for years about just how close Iran is to developing a nuclear bomb. There’s more, like his failure to secure Israel’s borders, but that should probably be enough. Just understand that he needs something to provide him with cover for all his failures at national leadership.

Then there’s Donald J. Trump, found guilty on 34 felony counts, indicted four times and impeached twice. A man who, apparently, will give you whatever you want, if you are willing to massage his ego. A man who promised to avoid getting the United States into yet another endless war in the Middle East. And yet, here we all are.

We had an agreement with Iran, that they would hold off on developing nukes, but Trump, acting in conjunction with Netanyahu’s wishes, trashed it back in 2018.

It’s widely believed that Trump killed the deal the United States, much of the world in fact, had with Iran, because he was out to smash anything that could be construed as an achievement of the Obama Administration, because he, Mr. Trump, has a problem with black people, and he couldn’t stand for America’s first black president to have had any success whatsoever.

Based purely upon the evidence, you could say that Donald Trump and Bebe Netanyahu, needlessly created the highly volatile situation within which we are now entangled.

These two guy are the best Israel and the United States can do? A terminal business failure/felon and a fugitive from international justice who appears to have repeatedly rejected solutions to endless war? These two guys are leading us around by the nose?

Bebe and Donald, A Bromance Made In Hell

The United States Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, told everyone, including the President, that Iran wasn’t working on a nuclear bomb. Bebe Netanyahu, says they were just weeks away from having nukes, making it necessary for Israel to launch attacks on the country. Bebe Netanyahu, has been saying that same thing, that Iran was only weeks away from developing a nuclear bomb, for years.

He can’t have it both ways, either they were weeks away, as he repeatedly said over the past 30 years, or they were years away, as our spies told Tulsi Gabbard. If Netanyahu, was being forthright, you have to think the Iranians would have developed a nuclear bomb years ago, maybe a couple of decades ago.

Who will Trump believe? The United States intelligence establishment, or. Bebe Netanyahu, who’s been crying wolf for decades? A man who is in deep political and possibly legal trouble with a big chunk of the Israeli electorate and needs something, like a war, to cover his tracks?

As prominent political advisor Mark McKinnon put it this morning, “Netanyahu, is driving Trump like a truck.” McKinnon, was political advisor to both George W. Bush and John McCain. Trump, should probably listen to what he says along with his own American intelligence people. The alternative is to drag the country into another potentially lengthy war in the Middle East.

So far all we know for sure, is that the threw a snit-fit when Tulsi Gabbard advised him that Netanyahu was not being honest, apparently cutting her out of the decision making process.

Netanyahu: The New Elephant In The Middle Of The Room

And so, in their latest stunt to give a huge middle finger to the President of the United States,  John Boehner and his extremist Republicans have invited Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to speak to a joint session of the Congress – with no prior consultation with the White House – thereby ignoring protocol and possibly undermining America’s image abroad, including the Administration’s ongoing efforts to cut a deal on nuclear power development with Iran.

This current bunch of Republicans have repeatedly appeared racist and self-centered, consistently putting their party above the nation’s best interest.   They will say anything and apparently do almost anything to advance their party’s interest and the interests of their wealthy benefactors.

As political satirist Bill Maher has pointed out, there are those who just can’t handle the fact that there’s a black man in the White House.

The unspoken impact of race remains the elephant in the middle of the room with regard to the Republican Party’s refusal to establish anything resembling a reasonable relationship with this current president.   Their ongoing intransigence and hateful reactionism represent a slander against both Mr. Obama, and the Office of the President of the United States.

I was recently reminded by a former colleague that in foreign affairs the nation must, out of necessity, speak with one voice.   And that one voice is the President of the United States.   Not the Speaker of the House of Representatives, unless the Speaker wishes to undermine the proper functioning of the Republic, possibly touching upon sedition.

The Speaker was elected to represent his district.   The President, as America’s  only nationally elected official, represents all the American people.  Mr. Netanyahu, may not know this.    When America speaks with one voice, that one voice comes from the President.

It is sad that an elected leader of the Israeli people has seen fit to join the out of control John Boehner and his Obama-hating colleagues in this most recent staged event, particularly with elections approaching in Israel.    Netanyahu’s ongoing desire for the United States to become militarily entangled with Iran is transparent, as is his apparent belief that upstaging a sitting President of the United States will help to maintain his power base at home, which is where he should have stayed.

One can only hope sensibility will prevail and that most in the House and Senate will boycott Netanyahu’s inappropriate appearance, although you can be sure most Republicans will be there cheering him on, using him as a political stooge in their continuing effort to defame the Obama White House and undercut President Obama’s ability to avoid a potential war by reaching a deal on nuclear power with Iran.

John McCain’s refrain of “Bomb, bomb.bomb….bomb, bomb Iran,” continues to resonate.   He and Bibi Netanyahu are undoubtedly of one mind on the subject.

This entire misguided affair is simply sad, for both the United States and for Israel, and is one more indicator of how unreasonable and broken our politics have become.

One wonders if Mr. Obama will now be invited to address the Knesset.
