Revitalizing The American Steel Industry – Another Empty Promise From Donald Trump?

It really pains me to see DJT in Pittsburgh, selling the locals on his big beautiful push to restart the American steel industry. As a former Pittsburgher, it hurts to see what is probably just another of Trump’s empty bags of false hope being peddled to a mostly uninformed or misinformed public. This has all the earmarks of another “Foxconn” deal, another Trumpian promise, this one from 2017, that failed to materialize. Trump said it would pull in 13-thousand jobs for Wisconsin. The real number turned out to be closer to 13-hundred.

The real tragedy here lies in the fact that much of the world, including China, is moving forward with the development of renewable energy and hi-tech, while Donald Trump, is in Western PA, pushing steel production which was largely off-shored years ago, as American investors ran away from low-tech and high union labor costs. Another big factor in the death of U.S. steel production, a factor often conveniently forgotten by those who were not there, is that foreign steel makers like Germany and Japan, handed out government subsidies to their steel companies back in the 70’s and 80’s, allowing them to undercut American steelmakers, eventually running them out of business.

There is also the “A” word. Automation. Even if new steel plants are built, which would in all likelihood take years, much of the production would surely be automated, making any Trumpian promise of a return to the past for the American steel industry another empty bag. Another promise that will probably last as long as his new tariffs of up to 50% on steel imports to the United States. Trump is going to cave on those, just like he caved on his other tariffs, within months or maybe even weeks.

Wanna know what DJT is gonna do in the future? Get your head out of the sand and examine what he’s done in the past. This guy will say anything for votes. Just like he did in Wisconsin.
