Never thought we’d hear Robert Gates say this, particularly while speaking to cadets at West Point. Gates, is a holdover from the administration of George W. Bush.
“Any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ‘have his head examined,’ as General [Douglas] MacArthur so delicately put it.” -Robert Gates, U.S. Secretary of Defense
Secretary Gates comments might be viewed as a condemnation of the policies of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and the other “NeoCons” who pushed for the U.S invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. However, at this point it would appear a more intelligent approach to geopolitics with greater consideration to the economic and social impact of war is winning out. Hopefully, this time, the lessons will not be forgotten. Again. Click here for the story.
