Call it what you will, a crack in the dam, a sliver of sunshine breaking through the vast darkness of Republican sloth. Whatever you want to call it, it has happened.
First, Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins stood up against the misguided and just plain irrational nomination of Kash Patel for director of the FBI. The guy, who clearly shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near any branch of law enforcement, was confirmed anyway, as Murkowski and Collins were the only two Republicans with the courage to stand up against Donald Trump, but they did.
Then came Senator Thom Tillis, of North Carolina. He was a another beam of light and truthfulness to cut through all the Trumpian insanity, as he took to the senate floor to lambaste Vladimir Putin and Trump’s demented stand on supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine while turning his back on NATO and our traditional allies.
Three Republican senators may not be much, but it’s a start. A beginning in what hopefully will be a return to sane and responsible governance by the Republican Party, before Donald J. Trump, brings us all down, destroying our “shining city on a hill” that took 250 years to build.
We can only pray there will be more, joining in the patriotic fight against creeping despotism, until the entire Republican Party, or most of it at least, can regain their senses and stand as a block against Donald Trump, refusing to accept his attempted overthrow of our Constitutional Democracy.
America needs heroes not cowards, and we need them now. People willing to take the lead, like Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska.
Use any metaphor you like, the train carrying American patriots to the continued successful future of our Constitutional Democracy is about to leave the station. Time to pick a side, Democracy or dictator.
